Here's Why I Will Never Let My Son Become a Boy Scout
The Cub Scouts are an iconic part of an American childhood. I standing brag about my Pinewood Derby victories. When my son was dropped I began to remember about future years tenting out and earning merit badges.
What a difference few years make.
Last July I was tally down the days to realizing that dream. Then the Scouts did something I never thought I would object to, they allowed the President to address the Boy Scout Gala.
Donald Trump made them pay for that decision, going on a foul-spoken jabber attacking the press and running into political tangents or else of addressing the scouts themselves.
After that happened, here are the three strikes the Scouts commited that lost my allegiance.
Assume Extraordinary
Damage control started with the Scouts themselves, culminating in a foodstuff-mouthed statement. It feigned devotion to bipartisanship and acted shocked at the reply to Trump's quarrel. Who could have possibly foreseen Outflank coming across as possibly a morsel unhinged? Differently anyone who has ever seen or detected him verbalize, I imply.
Strike Two
I was taught a scout was honest, forthright, and inclined to do his unsurpassable. Today that's formed as "Doesn't inquire questions that certain politician would instead non get asked".
Eleven-year-genuine Ames Mayfield was kicked out of his den in Broomfield CO days aft Colorado Senator Vicki Marble attended his Hideout meeting. Mayfield inquired about racially negatively charged quotes attributed to her in 2013 interview and her votes to allow people charged with domestic violence to hold out access to guns.
"Why on earth would you require someone who beatniks their wife to hold access to a gun?" Mayfield asked.
The Den leader ejected Mayfield few years later and is refusing to address questions on the motivation for terminating Mayfield's Scout vocation. You can watch the whole exchange here.
Despite this I had hoped the Scouts would ut the right thing, stepping in to protect the young scout. Zero such luck. The Denver Boy Scout Council wussed exterior, justifying Mayfield's punishment, saying membership was "up to the target organization." The did place him in another den, only still…
Strike Three
My Son has plenty of personal challenges of his own and I was viewing Scouts A a growth opportunity for him. But the treatment of Ames is the current example of the Boy Scouts punching themselves in the junk. It also successful me realize one more than overwhelming problem with my son being a modern reconnoitre: The boy is overmuch like me.
As a high school freshman, I was ejected from a news conference for Iowa Regulator Terry Branstad because he was unwilled to attempt to answer my questions. My son is an intelligent and thoughtful young man. I could see him calling out an elected official in their own lyric. He would never do the politico a favor and let birl their style out of IT. This could have easy been him.
But it never will be. Non while the scouts view freedom of speech as something to ignore for convenience.
